A sump pump is the last line of defence for most Barrie basements, and it is the component most likely to be undersized, unmonitored, and eleven years old.

What a proper installation includes
- A real pit — a proper liner set into the slab with a stone bed, not a plastic bucket dropped into a hole.
- A cast-iron or stainless submersible pump sized to the actual inflow. Cast iron sinks heat into the water and runs cooler than plastic, which is why it outlasts it.
- A sealed, gasketed lid. An open pit vents soil gas including radon into the basement and it is a drowning hazard with small children in the house.
- A check valve on the discharge, so water does not run straight back into the pit each time the pump stops. A pump short-cycling on its own discharge burns out early.
- Discharge routed at least 2 metres from the foundation, sloped, and never into the sanitary sewer.
- A high-water alarm. Fifteen dollars of alarm has saved more basements than most of what is on this page.

On the dedicated circuit: a sump pump sharing a circuit with a freezer and a workshop outlet is a common and bad arrangement, because the thing that trips the breaker is never the pump and you find out in April.

Sump pumps — common questions
How long does a sump pump last?
Seven to ten years for a decent submersible, less if it cycles frequently. If yours is over eight years old and you have not tested it, test it now — pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm it starts, pumps, and stops cleanly.
Do I need a battery backup in Barrie?
If you rely on the pump to keep the basement dry, yes. The highest-groundwater period of the year here coincides with the storms and ice that cause power outages. A pump with no power during the March thaw is the single most common way a "waterproofed" basement floods.
Can I discharge my sump into the floor drain?
No. That routes groundwater into the sanitary sewer, which is prohibited, contributes to the sewer surcharging that backs up into basements on your street, and can void your own coverage. Discharge outside, sloped away, well clear of the foundation and the property line.
My pump runs constantly. Is that bad?
It means the pump is doing the whole job of managing your water table on its own. It will wear out early, and you have no margin if it fails. Constant cycling usually points at drainage or grading that could be reducing the inflow, and that is a cheaper fix than a bigger pump.
