What to have ready

Your address, and whether you own or rent.
Where the water shows up, and what the weather was doing when it did.
Roughly when the house was built, and whether the foundation is poured concrete or block.
Photos of the wet area and of the outside of that same wall, including the downspout.
Whether you have a sump pit, and if so how old the pump is.

There is standing water in the basement now.
Water is rising up through the floor drain rather than in at the walls.
Water is anywhere near an electrical panel, furnace or water heater — treat that as an electrical hazard first.
A foundation wall has a horizontal crack, or is visibly bowing inward.
The sump pump has stopped and it is still raining or melting.
